Green Island Park

Green Island Park is located in the south of Huancheng North Road, surrounded by water on three sides, canal gate in the East, Yaojiang River and Yaojiang gate in the west, and Ningbo Grand Theater in the south. It covers an area of about 5.4 hectares, like a peninsula hanging in the water.

At the entrance of the park, the sculptures built at the same time as the zoo are still preserved, and the Yuanyang bridge and Yuanyang Lake are the same as before; the 35m Ferris wheel is still towering, but it just stops rotating, but when night falls, the landscape lights installed on the ferris wheel will light up, flashing like a peacock. Grand Canal gate, Grand Theater, Yaojiang, lighting, water shadow and charming visitors, together play a beautiful port city "Serenade".

Historical evolution

After nearly two years of closure, the renovated former Yaojiang zoo, the Green Island Park, was opened to the public free of charge on January 25, 2006.

After a lot of thinking, the original Yaojiang zoo finally chose to take the road of "returning to nature".

When you enter the Green Island Park, you can see that the layout of the original zoo has not changed. At the entrance of the park, the sculptures built at the same time as the zoo are still preserved, and the Yuanyang bridge and Yuanyang Lake are the same as before; the 35m Ferris wheel is still towering, but it just stops rotating, but when night falls, the landscape lights installed on the ferris wheel will light up, flashing like a peacock. Grand Canal gate, Grand Theater, Yaojiang, lighting, water shadow and charming visitors together play a beautiful "Serenade" of the port city.

Of course, there are many changes: the old garden roads, buildings and service facilities have been repaired. The Peacock Garden has been changed, the mushroom house has disappeared, the bear hall has been changed into a square where people can dance, the monkey mountain has become a scene of piling stones, and the pool where sea lions used to live now has fish.

The green Peninsula deserves its reputation

Green Island Park, the most impressive or eyeful of green, is a rare urban "water oasis.".

The renovation of Green Island Park started in November 2005. The landscape department first checked and numbered all the trees, so that the original plant community was effectively preserved. It is understood that there are more than 2000 trees here, all planted when the zoo was completed in 1984, and now they have grown into towering trees. These trees include Cinnamomum camphora, Magnolia grandiflora, Acer truncatum, Pittosporum corniculatum, and so on. Among them, the diameter at breast height of the larger trees reaches 40-50 cm.

On the basis of retaining the original plant community, the Department of landscape architecture has also planted more than 10 kinds of ground cover plants, such as fruit blue, Mediterranean Podocarpus, Spiraea chrysanthema, Photinia fraxina, etc., to create a group of "vanilla green garden" landscape with different flower styles and staggered flowering periods. According to reports, Green Island Park's green coverage rate is about 80%.

Ecological landscape along the Bank of the lake

The good ecological environment of Green Island Park has become an ideal habitat for birds. Reporters found that in one of the two deciduous trees, each built a nest, there are many sparrows flying around in the forest. According to garden workers, egrets often dance here. In the process of construction, the garden workers also found a large group of wild ducks settling down in the lake.

Ditui lake is the original Yuanyang Lake, divided into two parts. At the end of the two lakes is a tidal pool connecting the Yao River. The water in the pool will rise and fall with the tide of the Yao River. When the tide rises, the tide water submerges the aquatic plants in the tide pool and enters the lake. When the tide falls, the aquatic plants in the tide pool reappear.
