Ningxia Medical University is located in Yinchuan city. The predecessor of the school is Ningxia Medical College established in 1958. In 1962, it was renamed Department of medicine of Ningxia University. In 1972, Shanghai Railway Medical College moved to Yinchuan and merged with the medical department of Ningxia University to rebuild Ningxia Medical College. Postgraduate education began in 1978. In August 2008, the University changed its name to Ningxia Medical University. In February 2010, it became a new doctoral degree awarding unit.
