Xiangtan University, or Xiangtan University for short, was founded in 1958. It is a comprehensive national key university initiated by Chairman Mao Zedong. On September 10, 1958, Mao Zedong wrote the name of "Xiangtan University" in his own handwriting, and asked "we must run Xiangtan University well". The school is jointly built by the Hunan Provincial People's government, the Ministry of education of the people's Republic of China and the State Administration of science, technology and industry for national defense.
