The predecessor of Tianjin Business University is Tianjin business college, which was founded by the Ministry of Commerce and Tianjin Municipal People's Government in 1980. In 1998, the central and local governments jointly built a local management system. In 2007, it was renamed Tianjin University of Commerce. The school aims to build a high-level university with distinctive business characteristics and meet the needs of the society, serving the economic and social development.

Located at No. 409, Guangrong Road, Beichen District, Tianjin, the school covers an area of nearly 1340 mu, with a construction area of nearly 490000 square meters and a total value of 420 million yuan in teaching and scientific research equipment. At present, the library has a collection of 2.1098 million books in Chinese and foreign languages, subscribing to more than 1200 Chinese and foreign newspapers and periodicals, 107 Chinese and foreign databases, and 4.8835 million e-books every year.

There are more than 22000 students in the school, including 14 colleges and universities of foreign language teaching, including school of mechanical engineering, School of economics, School of management, School of accounting, School of biotechnology and food science, School of law, School of public administration, School of Marxism, School of foreign languages, School of science, School of information engineering, School of international education cooperation, School of art, College of Higher Vocational and continuing education There are three teaching departments: the Teaching Department of basic courses, the Teaching Department of physical education. At present, there are 54 undergraduate majors (directions) and 68 master's programs, including 9 master's programs of first-class disciplines and 10 master's programs of professional degrees. The university has the qualification of recommending excellent fresh undergraduate graduates to study for postgraduates without examination, as well as the enrollment qualification of postgraduates from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and the right to apply for master's degree granting by personnel with the same academic level.

The discipline of power engineering and Engineering Thermophysics was selected into the list of first-class discipline construction in Tianjin, and the discipline group of cold chain logistics and modern service industry was selected into the list of characteristic discipline construction in Tianjin. The university has seven municipal key disciplines, one engineering research center of the Ministry of education, one Tianjin Engineering Center, two Tianjin key laboratories, two Tianjin key research bases of Humanities and Social Sciences, one Tianjin University think tank, and several university level research institutes, institutes and centers.

The major of finance is the national comprehensive reform pilot major, the major of food science and engineering is the first batch of national excellent agriculture and forestry talents education and training plan reform pilot major, the major of energy and power engineering is Tianjin comprehensive reform pilot major and Tianjin "excellent engineer talents training" pilot major. The school has established a national talent training mode innovation experimental zone of "international hotel management", a talent training base of China's tourism and hotel industry, and a national off campus practice education base of "Tianjin Commercial University Yantai ice Wheel Co., Ltd. engineering practice education center". With Florida International University, Charleston University and East Michigan University, we have carried out undergraduate and postgraduate level cooperative education. The cooperative education project has passed the evaluation of Sino foreign cooperative education project of the Ministry of education. The major of hotel management (Sino American cooperation) has been rated as 20 by China Education Quality Evaluation Center and China Science Evaluation Research Center of Wuhan University 14-2015, 2017-2018 China Hotel Management University competitiveness ranking first.
