With the approval of the Ministry of education, Xiangnan University is a comprehensive full-time general public undergraduate college established in 2003 by the merger of Chenzhou Teachers College, Chenzhou Medical College, Chenzhou Education College and Chenzhou Normal University. Its school running history can be traced back to the third women's normal school in Hunan Province founded in 1912.

The university is located in Chenzhou City, the "18th blessed place in the world" and the "South Gate" of Hunan Province.
