The predecessor of Shanxi Medical University is Shanxi Medical College, which was founded in 1919. It was established independently in 1953 and renamed as Shanxi Medical College. In 1955, it became one of the six medical colleges with health departments in China. In 1996, it was renamed Shanxi Medical University. The university is approved by the Ministry of education as the first undergraduate professional college of forensic medicine in China, the first batch of authorized units of master's degree, the first batch of authorized units of bachelor's degree, the third batch of authorized units of doctor's degree in China and Shanxi Province, the first batch of authorized units of doctor's degree in nursing science in China, one of 25 medical colleges and universities offering seven-year clinical medicine in China, and the first batch of authorized units of doctor's degree in China Clinical medicine is one of the first batch of "excellent doctor education and training plan" pilot units of the Ministry of education.
