Guangdong University of foreign studies is a key foreign-related University in Guangdong Province, which was established in June 1995 by the merger of the former Guangzhou Institute of foreign languages and the former Guangzhou Institute of foreign trade. Established in 1965, the former Guangzhou Institute of foreign languages is one of the three foreign language colleges directly managed by the former State Education Commission (now the Ministry of Education). The former Guangzhou Institute of foreign trade, founded in 1980, is one of the four foreign trade colleges directly managed by the former Ministry of foreign trade and Economic Cooperation (now the Ministry of Commerce).

The school is located in Guangzhou, a famous historical and cultural city in China and the economic center of South China. The school has three campuses, with a total area of 2172 mu, of which the north campus is located at the northern foot of Baiyun Mountain in Guangzhou, a national scenic spot, covering an area of 821 mu; the south campus is located in Guangzhou University City, covering an area of 1095 mu; and the Dalang Campus is located in Dalang, Guangzhou, covering an area of 256 mu. The campus is an ideal place to cultivate sentiment, study and teach.

The school practices the school motto of "understanding morality, upholding practice, learning from both Chinese and Western countries", focuses on promoting the integration of foreign languages and majors, and cultivates international general talents with "one specialty and multiple abilities" (high ideological quality and professional level), "two strengths" (strong foreign language practice ability and information technology application ability), international vision and innovation consciousness, and can directly participate in international competition and cooperation. The teaching level and talent training quality of the University have been widely recognized and fully affirmed by the society. In 2003, it was rated as excellent in the undergraduate teaching evaluation of the Ministry of education. The school enrolls students from more than 20 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities directly under the central government, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, all of which are in the first batch. The major set up by the University meets the needs of the society, graduates are welcomed by the society, and the employment rate is among the highest in Colleges and universities in Guangdong Province.

The school has good conditions and good teaching environment. The existing fixed assets are 601.47 million yuan, including 126.98 million yuan of teaching and scientific research equipment. With a total area of more than 52000 square meters of laboratories, including broadband multimedia teaching network laboratory, EDI international trade panoramic simulation laboratory, simultaneous interpretation simulation laboratory, three key laboratories in Guangdong Province and various specifications of language laboratories. The total area of the two campuses of the library is 50000 square meters. The library implements the integrated open management mode of collection, borrowing, reading and research. The main reader service areas open 81 hours a week. Currently, it has a collection of 1.39 million books, 2954 newspapers and periodicals at home and abroad, 20 kinds of Chinese and foreign language network database resources, and has realized the network integrated management of literature procurement, classified cataloging, circulation and retrieval in 13 languages.

The total number of full-time teachers in the school has reached 962, of which 38% are professors and associate professors, and 77.4% have master's degree or above. In addition, there are 80 visiting professors and more than 60 long-term foreign experts. Many experts and scholars hold leading positions in national and provincial academic organizations, or are employed as editorial board members or special reviewers by international authoritative journals of their disciplines, or as consultants or consulting experts of state organs, enterprises and institutions at all levels. At present, there are 18648 undergraduate and graduate students, and more than 16000 adult and junior college students, refresher and trainee students, and foreign students.

The University attaches great importance to and actively carries out academic and cultural exchanges with foreign countries.
