China's Higher Maritime Education originated in Shanghai. In 1909, the shipping department of Shanghai higher industry school (Nanyang public school) of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the late Qing Dynasty created a precedent for China's higher maritime education. Wusong merchant shipping school was founded in 1912 and renamed Wusong Merchant Shipping College in 1933. In 1959, the Ministry of communications established Shanghai Maritime College in Shanghai. In 2004, it was renamed Shanghai Maritime University with the approval of the Ministry of education. In order to better serve the construction of Shanghai international shipping center and the development of national shipping industry, according to the layout and structural adjustment plan of Shanghai universities, the main body of Shanghai Maritime University was relocated to Lingang New City in 2008. In 2009, the school held a series of activities to celebrate the centennial.
Shanghai Maritime University is a multi-disciplinary university with the characteristics of shipping, logistics and ocean, and disciplines of engineering, management, economics, law, literature and science. In 2008, the Shanghai Municipal People's government signed an agreement with the Ministry of transport to jointly build Shanghai Maritime University.
In 2004, the Ministry of education's undergraduate teaching evaluation and 2006, the Ministry of education's English teaching evaluation were excellent. In 2015, the annual total funding for science and technology reached 280 million yuan, and won a number of national scientific research projects and science and technology progress awards above the ministerial and municipal levels.
The school implements the two-level management system, and now has the Merchant Shipping College, transportation college, economic management college, Logistics Engineering College (set up Sino Dutch mechanical and electrical engineering college), law college, information engineering college, foreign languages college, marine science and Engineering College, arts and Sciences College (set up Xu Beihong Art College), Science Research Institute, Shanghai Advanced International Shipping College, etc Department. Among the more than 21000 students, there are more than 17000 undergraduates, more than 3000 postgraduates and more than 600 international students. Among the more than 1100 full-time teachers, 156 are professors, and the proportion of teachers with doctoral degrees is about 53%. The school is committed to training all kinds of specialized talents at all levels needed by the national shipping industry, and has delivered a large number of graduates to the national port and shipping enterprises, institutions and government departments, known as the "cradle of senior shipping talents".
In 2013, the school established China (Shanghai) free trade zone supply chain research institute and Shanghai Advanced International Shipping College. The Supply Chain Research Institute of China (Shanghai) free trade zone organically combines the construction of free trade zone with the research of supply chain, so as to improve the level of industrial chain construction of free trade zone, promote the transformation and development of goods trade to service trade in free trade zone, and promote the transformation of government regulatory functions. Shanghai Advanced International Shipping College adopts the international advanced business school operation mode, shares resources with global excellent education institutions, strives to build a domestic leading and internationally famous shipping financial education brand, and builds an influential shipping high-end talent export base.
In 2008, more than 20 units including Shanghai Education Commission, Shanghai urban rural construction and Transportation Commission, Shanghai Maritime University and Hongkou District People's Government jointly initiated the establishment of Shanghai International Shipping Research Center. Affiliated with Shanghai Maritime University, the center is a research and consulting institution for the development of international shipping industry, providing decision-making consultation and information services for the government, domestic and foreign enterprises and shipping institutions. It is one of the first batch of "university knowledge service platforms" established by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. In 2014, the Municipal Education Commission listed the platform as "Shanghai Collaborative Innovation Center".
The university has established intercollegiate exchange and cooperation relations with more than 70 sister universities abroad, carrying out teacher exchange, cooperative school running, cooperative scientific research, student exchange, etc. It has established close ties with international well-known shipping organizations / organizations such as the United Nations International Maritime Organization, the Baltic International Shipping Association and det Norske Veritas. Since 2010, "international class" has been opened, inviting students from maritime colleges and universities of the United States, South Korea, Poland, Russia, Germany and other countries to study "navigation technology", "shipping management" and other majors. In 2011, with the approval of the Ministry of education, the University cooperated with the Maritime University of central and western Africa in Ghana to hold the undergraduate education project of "logistics management" and began to recruit students in Africa. This is the first overseas education project in which local colleges and universities in Shanghai awarded undergraduate diplomas of Chinese universities. In 2012, the University was approved by the Ministry of education and officially became the "University accepting Chinese government scholarship for international students in China".
