Guangzhou City Vocational College is a higher vocational college approved by Guangdong Provincial People's government and registered by the Ministry of education in March 2005. The college was founded in September 2005. In May 2009, Guangzhou municipal government approved the college to add the brand of "Guangzhou Community College", becoming the first community college in Guangzhou.

The college takes "quality based, talent based, culture based and characteristic based" as its school running philosophy. The orientation of running a school is: Based on Guangzhou, serving Guangzhou, radiating South China, guided by the needs of industry and citizens, serving industry, community and citizens, so as to make the college develop into a high-level technical and skilled talent training base, application technology transformation platform, community education and service demonstration center and citizen training center characterized by the integration of Lingnan culture and the spirit of the times Lifelong learning garden.

The college is located in Guangzhou, the central city of China, with five campuses. Guangyuan South Campus and Guangyuan North Campus are located at the foot of Baiyun Mountain and the Bank of Luhu lake. Haizhu, Binjiang and Yuexiu campuses are located in the central urban area of Guangzhou. The college has a multi-functional modern library, teaching building, training building, dormitory building, student activity center, indoor and outdoor stadiums and other facilities. The school running history of the college can be traced back to 1962. Over the past few decades, it has trained more than 300000 talents for all walks of life, and has been widely praised by the society. In December 2009, the college passed the personnel training assessment of the Ministry of education with excellent results. In November 2013, it was officially established as "the second batch of provincial model higher vocational colleges" by the Department of education of Guangdong Province.

At present, the college enrolls students from 13 provinces and autonomous regions, including Guangdong, Anhui, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, Sichuan, Guangxi, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Henan, Guizhou, Yunnan and Gansu. The first volunteer online rate and freshman registration rate have maintained a high level for consecutive years.
