Annual herb, 0.5-1 m high. Stem erect, hollow, round, with grooves on the surface, slightly branched. Leaves alternate, lanceolate to oblong, 8-14 cm long, 1-2.8 cm wide, apex acuminate, base acute, entire, the closer to the top of the stem, the smaller the leaf; stipe glabrous; stipules sheath shaped, quite long, membranous. The flowers are bisexual, yellowish green, with many clusters in the axils of cotyledons, and then a raceme composed of most flowers; the pedicel is slender, with nodes at the lower part; the calyx is 6-lobed, 3 small, linear oblong, green, 3 large, triangular ovate or rhombic on the inner surface; the fruit is yellowish brown and reticulate when ripe; there is an oblong raised tumor in the middle of each back, and 2-6 needlelike spikelets on the edge .
