[plant morphology] Smilax China

Perennial climbing vines, more than 2 meters long. The rhizome is short, the root is slender, slightly curved, the skin is grayish brown, tough, and sparsely spiny. The stem is slightly square, green, striped, with flat spines, slightly curved apex, more base and less upper part. The leaves are thin leathery, elliptic to triangular ovate, 3-8 cm long and 2-6 cm wide, apex acuminate, base slightly heart-shaped or round, entire, slightly wavy, main veins 5-7, reticulate veins obvious. Inflorescence: female flowers oblong, campanulate, 1.5-6 mm long; stamens oblong, staminate, 1.5-5 cm long; stamens oblong, staminate, 1.5-5 cm long. Berries are globose and black when ripe. The flowering period is from June to August. The fruit period is from July to September.

It grows in the mixed forest of mountains. Distributed in Liaoning, Hebei, Henan, Shandong, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu and other places.

It is not straight, and scattered with a few finer fibrous roots and fine spines. The spines are slightly curved and touch the hands. The root surface is grayish brown or grayish brown. It is tough, elastic and not easy to break. The cross section is grayish white or yellowish white, with light brown ring in the middle and small holes (ducts) outside the ring. There is no breath, and the taste is light. It is better to have long root, tough quality and few fine fibrous roots.
