[plant morphology] Maize

Annual herbs. The stem is stout, erect, 1-4 meters high, with pith between nodes and aerial roots at the base. Leaf blade long, flat, sword or lanceolate, apex acuminate, margin undulate, with strong midrib. Male panicle terminal, male spikelet twin, 1 cm long, containing 2 florets; glumes several equal length, membranous, dorsal protuberant, with 9-10 veins; lemma and palea are transparent membranous, almost equal to glumes; anthers orange yellow, 5 mm long; female spikelets twin, arranged in 8-30 rows on thick spongy rachis; glumes equal, very wide, veinless, ciliated, the first small Flowers sterile; lemma hyaline membranous, glume like but small glabrous, palea or not; lemma of the second floret like the first floret, with a palea; pistil with very long and thin style.
