Annual herbs. The underground tuber is elliptic, 4-8 cm long, 3-6 cm in diameter, yellow white in outer skin, white in inner, with bud eyes, growing on the short stolon in dense form. Aboveground stem weak, 50-90 cm high, many branched, glabrous or pilose. Petiole ovate, 2-5 cm long, apex ovate or 2-5 cm long, apex ovate, apical to apical. Summer branch terminal flowers, cymes into panicles, total pedicels 6-14 cm long; calyx bell shaped, 5-lobed, lobes linear lanceolate; corolla radial, white or lavender, apex 5-lobed, lobes slightly triangular; stamen 5, filaments short, anthers oblong; pistil 1, ovary superior, 2-locular, style slightly longer than stamen, few fruit. [chemical composition] tuber contains 75.0% water, 18.5% starch, 0.8% sugar, 1.0% fiber, 2.0% nitrogen, 0.2% fat, 0.9% ash, etc. it also contains solanine, ranging from 20 mg to hundreds of mg per kilogram. Solanine is more in bud, and mainly in skin in tuber. The content of solanine in red skin was higher than that in yellow skin, and the content of solanine in immature skin was higher than that in mature skin.

[pharmacological action] the green tuber meat of germinated potato contains a small amount of solanine, which is not harmful to human body. However, in some cases (storage does not increase the content), the content of solanine can be increased by 4-6 times as much as normal, even more than 0.4 g / kg, and 0.2 g free solanine can produce typical saponification toxicity. Although the symptoms were serious, they did not cause death. It has been reported that children died of severe gastroenteritis after taking green potatoes. In rats, injection of solanine can increase blood glucose, and α - or β - adrenergic receptor blockers can inhibit this effect.
