The male is about 70 cm long and the female is smaller. Mouth flat, covered with soft skin, fleshy or rose, pointed with horny beak, gray or white. It lives in swamp area. When they migrate, they often gather in large groups and fly orderly. They breed in northern Siberia and migrate to the lower reaches of the Yangtze River to overwinter.
