[plant morphology] wild oat

Annual herbs. Fibrous roots are tough, culms erect, smooth, 60-120 cm high, with 2-4 nodes. The leaf sheath is loose, smooth or the base is covered with hairs; the ligule is hyaline and membranous, 1-5 mm long; the leaf blade is flat, 10-30 cm long, 4-12 mm wide, slightly rough, or sparsely pilose on the top and margin. Panicle spreading, pyramid shaped, 10-25 cm long, branches angular, rough; spikelet 13-25 mm long, with 2-3 flowers, its stalk bent and drooping, the top expanded: rachis internodes about 3 mm long, densely covered with light brown or white bristles, its nodes kneeling hard and easy to break off; glumes, several equal, usually with 9 veins; lemma hard, the first lemma 15-20 mm long, middle abaxial surface It has light brown or white bristles below, and its basal plate is densely covered with short bristles, and its hairs are light brown or white; the awn protrudes from the middle part of lemma, 2-4 cm long, geniculate, awn column brown, twisted. Caryopsis by light brown pilose, ventral surface longitudinal groove, 6-8 mm long. The flowering and fruiting period is from April to September.

Growing in barren fields or as weeds. It is widely distributed in the north and south of China.

The seeds of this plant (Lolium perenne L.) are also used for medicinal purposes.
