[plant morphology] Tonglan

Perennial epiphytic herbs, about 30-50 cm high, with many fibrous roots, fleshy, grayish white or light brown. The stem is clumped, cylindrical, green, with distinct nodes, like a bamboo shoot. There are several nodes at the base, with sheathed leaves tightly wrapped around the stem nodes. Leaves alternate, wide linear to long elliptic, 12-20 cm long, 2-5 cm wide, apex acuminate, base sheath embracing stem, fall leaves in autumn, residual leaf base forming membrane sheath embracing stem. Raceme terminal; flowers large, diameter up to 5 cm, white, lip golden yellow with red pattern, edge fimbriate, each flower base has a large oval bracts, more than 3 cm long, longer than pedicel. Capsule elliptic or ovate, with many powdery seeds. It blooms in summer.
