[plant morphology] Wulan

Large evergreen trees, 10-16m high; sticky aromatic resin. Bark grayish brown, smooth; branchlets brownish green, glabrous. The leaves are simple, pinnate, alternate, 30-65 cm long, with 15-21 leaflets; the leaflets are opposite, short petiole, leathery, oblong to ovate elliptic, 5-15 cm long, 3.5-7 cm wide, Keelung oblique, apex acuminate or acute, entire, glossy above, glabrous below, smooth below, reticulate veins obvious on both sides. Flowers bisexual or unisexual, coexisting with bisexual flowers; arranged in terminal or axillary narrow panicles, inflorescence longer than compound leaves; calyx cup-shaped, 3-5-lobed, ca. 2 mm long; petals 3-5, separated, ca. 3 times as long as calyx; stamens 6, inserted at the edge of disk, not longer than corolla; ovary superior, usually 2-locular, ovules 2 per locule, inserted on the placentate of axis. The drupe is ovoid to elliptic, slightly triangular, 3.5-4.5 cm long and 1.5-2 cm wide. It is dark purple at maturity, with smooth surface, woody nucleus, blunt ends, 1-3 seeds inside, and no endosperm. The flowering period is from May to July. The fruiting period is August.

Born in plains, hills, mountains and dense forests. Distributed in Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan and other places.
