[source] it is the rhizome of Dioscoreae temloba Thunb.

[plant morphology] perennial twining grass Liana. Stem sinistral, cylindric. Sometimes a plant is triangular heart-shaped from the base to the top, the whole edge or microwave shape, covered with white coarse hairs, sometimes the base is palmate heart-shaped, the edge is 5-9-lobed, medium or shallow, to the top is triangular heart-shaped, not split, the veins are mostly 9, and the leaves are not black after dry. The male inflorescence is panicle and the female inflorescence is drooping panicle. Capsule broad obovate, wing 1.3-1.5cm long, 2-2.5cm wide, brown when dry. The flowering period is from June to August and the fruiting period is from July to October.

It grows in sparse forest or shrub in mountain area. It is mainly produced in Zhejiang, Fujian and Jiangxi.

[harvesting] in autumn and winter, the fibrous roots are removed, washed, sliced and dried.

[character] the product has irregular oblique section, sparse root mark and conical convex base. The section is grayish white to grayish brown with yellowish brown punctate vascular bundles scattered. It is loose and slightly spongy. The taste is slightly bitter.

[chemical constituents] it contains dioscin, gracillin, protodioscin, kikuba saponin and methyl protodioscin.

[nature and taste] it is mild in nature and bitter in taste.

[indications] it can remove dampness and turbidity, dispel wind and relieve arthralgia. It is used for gonorrhea, leucorrhea, dampness heat sores, lumbago and knee arthralgia.

[note] the rhizomes of D. futschauensis Vline, which belongs to the same genus of Dioscorea zingiberensis, are used as Flos Lonicerae.
