Corolla 2-labial, tube short, throat broad, upper lip 2-petal, lower lip 3-lobed, large, concave with purple spots; stamens only 1 pair developed in front; ovary 2-locular, style slightly beyond the outside of upper lip. Nutlets 4, smooth, ovoid. The flowering period is from April to June.

It is native to southern European countries and cultivated in China.

[chemical constituents] the whole herb (leaves and branches) contains apigenin-7-glucoside, luteolin-7-glucoside, 5-hydroxy-4 ', 7-dimethoxyflavone, 4', 5-dihydroxy-7-methoxyflavone, salvianolic acid, carnosic acid, rosmarinine, isorosmarinine, epi - α - geraniol, α - geraniol, β - geraniol, betulin, ursolic acid and 19 α - hydroxyursolic acid 2 β - hydroxyoleanolic acid and β - sitosterol.
