[plant morphology] Mesona chinensis

Annual herbs. The lower part of the stem is on the ground, the upper part is erect, about 15-50 cm long, and the branches are sparsely hairy. Leaves ovate or ovate oblong, 2-4 cm long, apex slightly obtuse, base gradually contracted into a stalk, edge serrate, both sides have sparse long hair; the leaves on the upper part of inflorescence are smaller, bracteate, ovate to inverted triangular, shorter than flowers, base often purplish, falling off when bearing fruit. Raceme weak, 5-10 cm long; flowers small, whorled, petiole about 3 mm long; calyx small, campanulate, 2-lipped, upper lip 3-lobed, lower lip entire, fruiting or tubular, recurved, with longitudinal veins and transverse wrinkles; corolla light red, 2.5 mm long, upper lip wide, entire or toothed, lower lip long elliptic, concave; stamen 4, filaments prominent; pistil 1, style 2-lobed; disk expanded on one side. Nutlets oval. The flowering period is at the end of autumn.

It is distributed in the south of China.

[medicinal material] dry the whole grass and cut into sections about 20 cm long. The stem is square, covered with gray brown long hair, brown or black in appearance, grooved, and the young stem is often twisted; it is brittle and easy to break, with pith in the center. The leaves are opposite, more wrinkled, papery, slightly flexible, not easy to be broken, oblong or ovoid, with sparse hairs on both sides. Flowers are not common. It tastes light and sweet, and has gelatinous properties.
