Woody vines. The branches are densely barbed, the old branches are brown, the young branches are light green or yellowish green, with white lenticels. Leaves alternate, petiolate, 3-foliolate; leaflets elliptic, obovate, oblong to oblanceolate, 3-6 cm long, 1.5-2.5 cm wide, apex acute or apical, base cuneate, margin serrulate or rugose, leathery, glabrous on both sides, with faint glandular spots. Flowers are unisexual, white, cyan or yellow; bracts are very small; sepals are 4-5, margin is short hairy; petals are 4-5, outer surface is short puberulent at first; male flowers often form axillary corymbose panicles, stamens are 4-5, longer than petals; female flowers often form cymose panicles, flowers are few, sterile stamens are 4-5, ovary is hairy. The fruit is orange yellow to scarlet, with dark glandular spots, fleshy peel and 3-5 slightly raised ribs on the surface. Seeds reniform, black. The flowering period is from October to December. The fruit period is from December to February next year.
