[plant morphology] Rhododendron

Evergreen or semi evergreen shrubs, up to 3 m tall. Branches thin and numerous, densely covered with yellow or brown procumbent setae. Leaves ovate elliptic or obovate, 2-6 cm long, 1-3 cm wide, apex pointed, base cuneate, sparsely hirsute above, densely brown hairs below, more veins. The flower has 2-6 clustered branch ends; sepals 5, elliptic ovate, 2-4 mm long, densely covered with brown bristles, persistent; corolla rose to light red, broadly funnel-shaped, about 4-5 cm in diameter, lobes nearly obovate, upper 1-petal and proximal 2-petals with dark red spots; stamens 7-10, thin hairs under filaments; anthers purple; ovary ovoid, densely covered with bristles, stigma capitate. Capsule ovoid, 5-8 mm long, densely hirsute. The flowering period is April. The fruit is hot in October.

Born on hillside or flat land, forest, rock bank. It is distributed in Henan, Hubei and south of the Yangtze River.

[chemical constituents] the flower contains anthocyanins and flavonols, which are the pigment of the flower. The most common red pigments (anthocyanins) are cyanidin 3-glucoside and cyanidin 3,5-diglucoside. Generally, these two pigments exist at the same time. The anthocyanins of purple flower contain 3,5-diglucoside. The most common flavonol is Rhododendron 3-rhamnoglucoside. In addition, myricetin 5-methyl ether was also found in the flavonols of Zihua.
