[plant morphology] Machilus

Shrub, 1-6m high. The stem is much branched; the bark is tea brown; the branchlets are square. Leaves leathery, opposite, occasionally 3 whorls, obovate or broad ovate, 1-3 cm long, 0.5-3 cm wide, apex obtuse, base cuneate, entire, pinnate, lateral veins small, raised below, glabrous, with scattered glandular points, leaves with short petiole. Cymes terminal or axillary, 2-4.5 cm long; flowers white; calyx obconic, lobes 4, short and obtuse; petals 4, separated; stamens numerous. Berries ovoid, 6-10 mm in diameter, purple black at maturity, crown with persistent calyx eaves at the top; 1 seed inside. The flowering period is from May to June. The fruit period is from September to October.

It grows in sparse forest, shrub and valley stream. Distribution in Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Taiwan, Zhejiang, Anhui, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guizhou and other places.
