Tongzhou celebrities

Zhang Tinggui (1863 – 1929), named Xinyuan, was named Qianshan in his later years. In the Qing Dynasty, Tongzhou people lived in Sanlong Township in the south of Tongzhou city. He was intelligent and savvy since childhood. At the age of 8, he went to a private school. At the age of 14, he had finished five Confucian classics, including the book of songs, Shangshu, Jingyi, Liji, Chunqiu, and so on. His profound understanding of its meaning made him quite literary. Everyone who saw him admired his academic achievements.
Zhang Tinggui is a famous scholar in Tongzhou. Later, in every autumn round, he failed to win the provincial examination held by TongZhou Gongyuan because the chief examiner and the president did not adopt the opinions recommended by the sub examiners. As a result, he did not want to be enterprising any more, so he devoted himself to the study of Zhou Dunyi, Er Cheng and Yang Zhen in Song Dynasty and later Han Dynasty. He also set up an accounting room in Beijing, devoted himself to running schools and carrying out educational activities, so that many poor students could receive education and acquire knowledge. His lectures are very detailed, and his instructions are not complete. In his later years, he cooperated with Xiao Yingong, Lin Qinnan, Yun weisun and other famous people to give lectures in the capital. He made great progress and was very popular. In 1866 and 1867, he devoted himself to writing poems, especially with a sense of wonder.
On weekdays, Zhang Tinggui paid attention to practice and despised fame. Students and others are not welcome to celebrate their birthday. He helped the poor and encouraged the backward. He once said to primary and secondary school students who do not seek further study: "there is no immortal in the world, but those who are able to write are immortal. They always put their spirit between heaven and earth, so they are still studying." He was the author of the four rites of Guan marriage and funeral sacrifice, notes on the filial piety of the south, elucidation and collection of Changhuai poems, but he died in Beijing in 1929, aged 65.
