Playing cattle originated from the worship of nature in ancient times. In the era of farming civilization, cattle farming is particularly important for people's production and life. Therefore, through farming season and festive scenes, people express their wishes for a prosperous crop and a safe life for people and animals, and the custom of playing cattle folk dance emerged as the times require. Playing cattle usually requires seven or eight people to cooperate. One person acts as the cattle herder with props, the other two acts as the cattle body in the cattle props, and the other four are gongs and drummers.

On November 11, 2014, the traditional dance "playing cattle" in Shizhu County, Chongqing City, was approved by the State Council and listed in the fourth batch of National Intangible Cultural Heritage Representative projects.

Playing cattle usually requires seven or eight people to cooperate. One person acts as the cattle herder with props, the other two acts as the cattle body in the cattle props, and the other four are gongs and drummers. Big Brother Niu is the "conductor" of the cattle team. He has to carry a basket to tease the "cattle" and lead the "cattle" to dance, cooperating with each other to complete the dance movements of grazing, scratching, boiling water, jumping ridges and so on. The gongs and drums on one side or the audience can improvise cheers, say some auspicious words, and the scene is lively and happy.

"Playing with cows is an interesting dance. This non-relic is mainly spread in Shizhu Xituo, Xilu and Nanbin. It is a typical folk traditional dance related to farming and used for festive occasions.
