Kunming Stone Forest Scenic Area, also known as Yunnan Stone Forest, is located in Kunming Shilin Yi Autonomous County, 78 km away from the capital of Yunnan Province, Kunming. The area is 350 square kilometers. Kunming Stone Forest Scenic Area is mainly developed as a tourist area: Stone Forest Scenic Area, Black Pine Rock Scenic Area, Feilong Waterfall Scenic Area and Changhu Scenic Area.
Kunming Stone Forest Scenic Spot has been named "World Geopark" by UNESCO and "World Natural Heritage Scenic Spot". In 1982, it was approved by the State Council as one of the first batch of state-level key scenic spots. It is a national 5A-level scenic spot and a national civilized scenic spot.
About 300 million years ago, the Stone Forest Scenic Area in Kunming was a vast country. After a long geological evolution, it finally formed a very precious geological relic, covering many types of karst landforms on the earth.
As early as in the forty-second year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1614), Wang Liang of Lunan Zhizhou opened Zhiyun Cave in Shilin as a scenic spot and erected a stele of Zhiyun Cave.
In 1931, the stone forest scenic spot in Kunming was officially built.
In April 1, 1978, Shilin scenic spot began to carry out ticketing tours for Chinese and foreign tourists.
Since 1931, after 82 years of construction and development, Kunming Stone Forest Scenic Area has become a national AAAAA class tourist attraction.
