Bai Yan is good at performing the unfortunate women and the dignified and virtuous wife and mother. She has a distinct image and cooperates with Wu Chufan, Zhang Ying and Zhang huoyou most. The starring business cards include: beautiful rivers and mountains (1937), lady butterfly (1940), spring (1953), cold night (1955), broken dream of spring (1955), banquet of rich families (1959), lonely sea of people (1960), pity for parents (1960), night of reminiscence (1962), the first and second episodes of evil sea (1962) and the legacy of the sea (1962) Zhu (1965) and so on.
In 1952, Bai Yan and famous actors Wu Chufan, Zhang huoyou and Huang Manli founded "Zhonglian Film Enterprise Co., Ltd." with the purpose of producing high-quality films, Bai Yan resisted the trend of "seven days fresh" rough production and "no separation of actors and actresses" in the film industry at that time. In 1964, he quit the art world after playing mad woman. On May 6, 1987, he died of bone cancer in Hong Kong at the age of 67. He is the author of his autobiography Jinxiu youth.
