Li Zhiyu graduated from the performance Department of Shanghai Academy of drama in 1962. After that, he stayed in school and served as assistant professor, lecturer and associate professor of the performance department. In 1979 and 1980, he played the leading role in the film "the smile of the distressed man" and "the night rain of Bashan", and then he played the leading role or important role in the film "don't forget me" and "well".

His daughter, Li Yun, a famous actor, once played the leading role of Du Xiaoshuang in the TV series "on the side of the water". In 1987, she was selected by the audience as one of the "top ten film and television actors".
