Xu Sheng, whose name is cunzhai, was born in Fangli of Tongan County in Southern Song Dynasty. In the 23rd year of Shaoxing (1153), he studied with Zhu Xi in Tongan County, and then went to Jianyang to continue his study.

He returned home to proofread the quotations of Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi. He is a very rigorous scholar and a famous Confucian. He wrote Mencius and the book of rites, but they were all lost.
