Luo Wenjin

Sir Luo Wenjin, JP, (1893-1959), born in Hong Kong, is one of the four major families in Hong Kong from 1940s to 1960s. His father Luo Changzhao is a comprador of Jardine Matheson and his mother Shi Xiangqing is a member of Hedong family. In 1918, Luo Wenjin married he JINZI, the eldest daughter of He Dong. Luo Wenjin is the founding member of the Luo Wenjin family, the founder of the Asian Football Federation, a former member of the Urban Council, and a member of the Executive Council and the Legislative Council.

Basic information

Born in 1893. His father Luo Changzhao is a comprador of Jardine Matheson and his mother is a member of Hedong family. At the age of 13, he went to study in the UK and graduated first as a Bachelor of law in 1915. In 1918, he married JINZI, the eldest daughter of Hedong. In 1921, the Hong Kong government appointed him a gentry of the Taiping Bureau. In 1932, he was appointed as a member of the Youth League defense Bureau and the Health Bureau. In 1935, he was appointed as one of the three Chinese representatives who are not official members of the Legislative Council. He also serves as the director and counsellor of the University of Hong Kong. In 1946, he was promoted to the Executive Council and was knighted two years later. He once proposed to the Hong Kong government to abolish the censorship of Chinese newspapers. After the Second World War, he got involved in business and community affairs and served as the director and President of many listed companies. In 1949, he did not agree with the democratic politics of open Legislative Council elections. In 1958, he retired from the Executive Council. The next year, he died of a heart attack in his apartment.

Luo Wenjin is known for his outspokenness. He is fearless and powerful, and he stands up in Parliament. For example, under his strong persuasion, the Hong Kong government agreed to recruit Chinese nurses. Later, Luo Wenjin became the chief Chinese Unofficial member and was awarded the CBE by the British emperor. After the outbreak of the Second World War, the Japanese occupied Hong Kong. Luo Wenjin was held in solitary custody by the Japanese army, threatening him to participate in the Legislative Council presided over by the Japanese army. In desperation, Luo Wenjin carried out the policy of passive resistance and held every meeting without saying a word in protest. After the war, Luo Wenjin returned to work in the Legislative Council. In 1946, he was appointed a member of the Hong Kong Executive Council by the Hong Kong government. He was knighted three years later because he was enthusiastic about public welfare. In 1958, at the age of 66, Luo Wenjin retired from the Executive Council and worked in politics for 24 years. Luo Wenjin is also a successful businessman. He not only founded "Luo Wenjin law firm" with his younger brother, but also served as the director of China power company, Hong Kong Hotel, shipping company of Hong Kong, Hong Kong and Macao. On March 7, 1959, Luo Wenjin died of a heart attack at the age of 67. In the mid-1930s, Maolong suitcase business was booming due to its genuine goods, which aroused the envy of the British businessman wells. Once, wells blackmailed and ordered 3000 suitcases from Maolong. It is worth HK $200000. The judge, in full view of the public, had no choice but to file a false accusation against wells and pay a fine of 5000 yuan. From then on, Luo Wenjin gained a great reputation.
