Born in Tianjin, he moved to Hong Kong with his family at the age of 3 and began to study piano and violin at the age of 8. He studied conductor with Jean Louis Le roux and Joseph Liebling at San Francisco conservator of music and went to State University of New York for further study.

He studied conducting from international master Carl Bamberger and modern music master Arthur Weisberg. He has conducted many orchestras and troupes, such as Beijing Central Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra and Central Opera Company. From 1993 to mid-1997, he was music director and conductor of Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. He is now the artistic director of the Hong Kong Choir.
