Shi Huiming
Shi Huiming (1860-1930), an eminent monk in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, was born in Fujian. He was not outstanding in appearance and had no education background. He finally got the road by strictly abiding by the commandments, practicing hard, and traveling a long distance. As a result, his wisdom was greatly developed and his literary thoughts were springing up. When he was thirty-two years old, he began to teach the Dharma Sutra in Fayu temple. His unique views and brilliant elucidation made him well-known. Since then, the Sutra preaching method became more and more popular, mainly in Putuo Mountain, Tiantong temple and Lingyin Temple. He was good at saying, not stagnant sentences, but lived in a simple and clear place, with superb style, and devoted himself to Zen all his life. His wide range of legal origins and deep assimilation made him one of the most respected places in Shanghai and Hangzhou in the early years of the Republic of China. He was the abbot of Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou for more than 11 years. In the 19th year of the Republic of China, Shi Ji lived in Lingyin Temple. He was 71 years old and 63 years old. There is a book named master Huiming's revelation.
Life of the characters
Old master Huiming, the abbot of Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou, is well-known in the north and south of the country. He is especially praised by many monks and monks. He was born in Fujian Province. I heard that he was a young monk. When I was close to him, he was an old man. He was short, only five feet tall, with bronze skin, towering head and two cheekbones. His voice was as loud as a bell. When he was preaching scriptures in the hall, his voice made the bronze bell on the hall hum, which showed that he was a strange man. Looking at his appearance, he looks like the Luohan who subdues the dragon and subdues the tiger in the Luohan hall, which is quite similar to the body of the sixth patriarch who is worshipped in the ancestral hall of Nanhua temple in Guangdong.
Old master Huiming was a farmer in his ordinary life. He never studied at all. After becoming a monk, his career was a hard one. He served wailiao in the jungle, served as a vegetable head, a rice head, a water head, a clean head and other distressed jobs. He liked to sit and meditate in his spare time. Why does he have the title of a mage? It's also a strange thing to say. According to the common elders in the forest, when master Huiming was working in Tiantong temple in Ningbo as a "Xing Tang" (the duty of serving food for the public in Zhaitang), he would feed the dog after fasting every day. This is one of his daily routine. He was reluctant to throw away the rest of the dog's meal. In order to cherish his fortune, he picked it up, washed it with water, and brought it to him to eat. For several years, one day, when he was eating dog food, he burst out laughing. They asked him what he was laughing at? "I often hear people say that dogs have Buddha nature. Today, I understand that, so I'm funny," he said Since then, he seems to have come to understand the Buddha. This is just the so-called "the next person has the upper wisdom".
Later, Tiantong Temple invited the master to speak Yuanjue Sutra. Although he was a single practitioner, he was very excited and listened to the Sutra with the public every day. One day, he listened to the master's saying in the Sutra that "the sense of truth comes from the nature, not from the nature, but from the nature without evidence". He immediately opened his mind to understand and suddenly saw the nature. Every time after listening to the Scriptures, he would like to speak to his Tongliao to show his understanding of the Scriptures. All the Tongliao people sneered at him and said, "if you look at your face in the mirror, you have a look of distress like you, and you don't know another big word. Do you still want to be a preacher?" He was angry at that time, but he replied, "do you think I can't be a mage? Well, from today on, I will be a wizard to show you. Three years later, I will return to Tiantong to lecture! Wait and see! " When Tongliao heard him say such big words, they clapped their hands and laughed together! Some said: "if you use this material, you can be a preacher, unless the iron tree blossoms and the Yellow River flows backwards." Without arguing with them, he immediately went back to his room, put away his clothes, carried his burden and walked out of the mountain gate.
Since he left Tiantong, he has been walking around, reading stories, visiting good knowledge, and paying homage to the four famous mountains in China. It had been two years. In the spring of the third year, he heard that there was another Buddhist preaching Association in Tiantong temple, preaching the Huayan Sutra of Dafang Guangfo. So he was inspired and came back to Tiantong temple. When he walked into the guest hall and sat down, the Zhike master saw that he had only a broken burden, that he was also short, and that he looked distressed. He regarded him as a "Yunshui monk". Then he raised his face and asked him, "what's the good thing for you to stay here for a long time?" He replied, "I'm here to listen to the Scriptures. I've come to stay here for a list." The Zhike master was very amused. He thought that he came to listen to some scriptures like you. He joked, "do you know what Scriptures we are going to talk about here?" He raised his head and said, "why do you ask? Isn't it about Dafang Guangfo Huayan Sutra Zhike joked to him again and asked, "do you know how to say" Da Fang Guang "? Tell me, and if it's right, I'll let you do it When he saw the Zhike teacher asking questions on purpose, he immediately put down his face, pointed to the Zhike and said, "Hello, you didn't take part in the study! How can you ask me the Dharma with a slight heart? If you want to ask me for enlightenment, you must be respectful, wear your clothes, show your tools, salute me three times, and then kneel down and clap your hands in front of me before I can tell you. Is such a playful attitude the way to seek Dharma? " Zhike was choked by him. At that time, he felt that although he was not handsome, Mingtang was not small. So he immediately put up an "Oolong" and said, "please sit down for a while, and I'll come right away.".
The Zhike master turned around and ran to the Abbot's room. He told the abbot monk to "hide the truth". I asked him what scriptures he would listen to, and he replied that he would listen to the Huayan Sutra of Dafang Guangfo. I asked how to say "Da Fang Guang"? He said that if he wanted to listen to the three words "Da Fang Guang", he had to ask the abbot monk to put on his clothes and bring him to the Abbot's room. The abbot monk listened to the Zhike's words. He was curious for a moment. He put on his red ancestral clothes and came to the guest room with a tool. He invited Huiming monk to the Abbot's room. When monk Huiming came into his father-in-law's room, he said, "monk, if you want to listen to me, you must lend me your Dharma seat." The abbot took him to the throne respectfully and respectfully. He sat on the Dharma seat like a mage. He patted the "Fu Chi" and said, "monk, you are generous and broad in three words. Each word has four ways of speaking: wide in wide, wide in quantity, wide in quantity, and wide in quantity. If you want to talk about wide in broad, I can't finish it all my life. If you want to use two ways of speaking: wide in quantity and wide in quantity, it will take a year or a half. Suppose you want me to talk about medium in quantity Dharma, I can have a talk with you. What kind of Dharma do monks like to hear? " When the abbot heard this, he felt that the novice monk was not simple and did not dare to despise him. Instead, he replied, "please tell me about the measurement in the middle."
So he roared like a lion. How can he be called "big"? How to name "Fang"? How to name "Guang"? It's like the bottom of a barrel falling off and pouring down for three hours to talk about the three metaphysical meanings of the three characters. The more the abbot listened, the more happy he was. He felt that all the truth he said was flowing out of his own nature. He did not fall into the stereotype of his predecessors. He was insightful, fascinating and wonderful. He immediately saluted and said, "master, you are brilliant! Master is brilliant And he was asked to take his place. This is the reason why monk Huiming was honored as a master and the first time he began to preach.
Since then, many people in the jungles have admired master Huiming's reputation and asked him to lecture one after another. Every time he lectured, there was no empty seat. Although he has a reputation as a preacher, he doesn't think about it in books. His interest lies in Zen. His preaching is based on his understanding, unlike other preachers who have to refer to shuchao. He thinks that the meaning of shuchao is the opinion of predecessors and has nothing to do with himself. No matter how well he recites shuchao, he just counts treasures for others. Therefore, he never preached the Scriptures, but just eliminated the interpretation of the text, and liked to talk about the enlightening official cases and regulations, so he was popular with the general Zen and the scholars. As long as we hear the news that master Huiming is going to preach the Scriptures somewhere, Zen Hezi and some Buddhist monks are flocking to follow him. That kind of situation is not common for ordinary preachers. Although huilao is a non literate man, he speaks French very gracefully. That year, I spent the Chinese New Year in Lingyin. On New Year's Eve, he went to class and said, I remember two sentences in French, "flowers bloom and blossom, plum petals and fragrances are fragrant." how poetic! Is it possible for a man who does not drink ink to say that it is his realm of understanding. (there is a volume of master Huiming's quotations, which is recorded by master tanxuan in Hunan.)
During the half year when I was close to old master Huiming, I felt that this great virtue had many strange things to do. First, he is not vain. There is a fact that can be proved. In the ten years of the Republic of China, Lingyin Temple in Hangzhou was changed into Shifang Jungle (Lingyin Temple was originally a descendant Temple). Local elders, Dharma protectors and residents gathered to discuss the selection of the first abbot. All of them took master Huiming as the abbot of Lingyin, but he refused. He repeatedly urged me, but he refused. So after half a year, we set up a plan to invite huilao to eat in Lingyin Temple. Huilao did not doubt that he was there, but he was invited. When he passed the gate of Lingyin mountain, he saw rows of monks standing on both sides, all wearing clothes and holding utensils, as if they were welcoming. He saw that the situation was not right. Knowing that he had been cheated, he immediately turned his head and took a big stride. They ran after him, stopped him and asked him to come back. So he sat down on the ground, folded his legs, and refused to get up. We couldn't help it, so we had to carry him back to the temple of the heavenly king, where the bells and drums were ringing and firecrackers were set off. But he cried and yelled. When he took him to the Abbot's bench and sat down, he still cried! Everyone climbed underground and said in unison, "congratulations to the monk!" He cried and said, "I'm not the abbot
