Qinglinsi village is located in Gaobazhou, Yichang City, Hubei Province, with a long history and unique geographical environment. The villagers in this village are good at making riddles and guessing riddles. In Qinglin temple, almost everyone can say riddles, and the whole village, regardless of men, women, old and young, can compare their favorite works with each other anytime and anywhere. According to the survey, those who master 30 to 100 riddles account for 15% of the village's population, and those who master more than 100 riddles account for 5% of the village's population.
In recent years, the unique cultural phenomenon of riddle village in Qinglin temple has been widely concerned by many scholars and experts all over the country. Experts believe that the riddles of Qinglin temple are full of local flavor, distinctive local characteristics, entertainment, interest and knowledge, which have important reference value for the study of Chinese folk literature, folklore and local records. Relevant departments have successively edited and published six albums, including "selected riddles of Qinglin Temple", "selected riddles of Qinglin Temple (sequel)", "selected riddles of Qinglin Temple (selected Edition)", "selected riddles of Qinglin Temple", "riddle village of Qinglin temple in Hubei Province, China" and "selected riddles of marriage and childbirth", and established a riddle rescue and protection organization of Qinglin temple. In addition, the riddles and songs of Qinglin temple have been included in the local teaching materials of primary and secondary schools in Yichang city.
In July 2002, after organizing experts and scholars to demonstrate repeatedly, the Hubei Provincial Federation of literary and art circles named qinglinsi village "riddle village of qinglinsi in Hubei Province"; in 2002, the village was named "hometown of folk art in Hubei Province" by Hubei Provincial Department of culture; in 2003, qinglinsi village was named "riddle village of China" by China Association for democracy and people's livelihood.
At the end of the 20th century, with the development and construction of the Qingjiang Gaobazhou hydropower project, it has become the main inundated area. The migration population has reached 40% of the total population. At present, there are only 925 people left here. With the further development of Qingjiang water conservancy, the scope of inundated areas and immigrants will be further expanded. Coupled with the impact of new forms of cultural consumption, the folk cultural phenomenon of Qinglin Temple riddle is facing a serious crisis.
