Beichuan Qiang Autonomous County is the most concentrated area of Qiang nationality. Kouxian is a keepsake given by young Qiang people to their wives when they fall in love, which is one of the important reasons for the occurrence of Kouxian. Later, Qiang women gradually mastered the skill of playing harmonica, and the instrument was widely spread.

The production process of harmonica is simple. It uses a piece of green bamboo strip about 10 cm long, and a small reed is dug out in the middle. The reed is a bit like that on the organ, and there is a rope on one side. When playing, the right hand puts the string on the two lips, and the left hand pulls the hemp thread, and the bamboo spring makes a sound. Its voice is elegant, and its aftereffects are endless. Because of its narrow range, less than one octave, it can only play some simple tones. It seems to be simple to make, but it is a key technology to dig and cut the reed. If there is a slight deviation, it can not achieve the effect of playing. The mouth string plays very fastidiously, through the side the hemp thread pulls the vibration which produces to pronounce. The change of temperament depends on the strength of pulling the string, the position of the tongue touching the reed, the size of the mouth shape and the strength of the air flow in the mouth.

As a musical instrument with Qiang characteristics, Kouxian is facing the fate of dating, and few people can play it. According to the information available, only Wang Zelan, he Xiufen and Zhou shunlan from Shangwu village of qingpian township can make and play harmonica smoothly. Only Wang Zelan can play a complete song with a string.
