A brief introduction to Munao Song of Jingpo nationality:
Applicant: Longchuan County, Yunnan Province
Munao Zongge, also known as "Zongge", means "happy gathering, singing and dancing". It is popular in the Jingpo inhabited area of Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province. It is the most ceremonious traditional ethnic festival of Jingpo.
Munao vertical song can be traced back to the primitive society. The main activity of Munao vertical song is to dance Munao vertical song and dance. Before the formal activity, people set up four wooden columns in the center of the dance hall to worship the sun and indicate the dance route. On the side of the column are knives and spears, which symbolize the people's strong and resolute character. According to the legend that Munao dance originated from bird dance, a woodcarving rhinoceros and a peacock are set at both ends of the column. In front of the column stands the living bamboo high pole, indicated that the life is evergreen. There is a horizontal plaque on the top, with a picture of Jingpo's legendary origin in the Himalayas.
With the development of the times, Munao Festival has become a folk festival for Jingpo people to celebrate the harvest. The most representative form of Munao Festival is Munao vertical song. It includes sumunao, badang Munao, dingshuan Munao and Jieru Munao. Although there are not many dance movements matched with Munao's vertical song, the rhythm of Dunbu shoulder swing is distinctive and unique, which is the representative movement of Jingpo dance. When the Munao vertical song was held, tens of thousands of people took part in it, and they danced together. The atmosphere was grand and warm. It was full of national charisma and cohesion. It was also an important channel to strengthen national relations and enhance national unity. In 1983, through the discussion and approval of the Standing Committee of the people's Congress of Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, Munao Zongge was established as the legal national festival in Dehong Prefecture on the 15th and 16th of the first month of each year.
Jingpo is a cross-border ethnic group. There are nearly one million Jingpo people living in northern Myanmar and northern India. They hold monao chants at home and abroad. At present, Longchuan County has the largest population of Jingpo nationality, the most complete and standardized inheritance of Munao vertical songs, and the most representative area of Jingpo nationality. Munao Zongge is a collection of Jingpo culture, which involves all aspects of social production and life, and shows the traditional culture of Jingpo nationality. It is of great value to the study of Jingpo nationality's history and culture.
