The production techniques of national musical instruments in Shanghai can be traced back to the Qianlong and Jiaqing periods of the Qing Dynasty. At the beginning of twentieth Century, dozens of musical instruments were gathered in Town God's Temple Avenue (now Fang Bang Middle Road), five road (today's Guang Dong Road) and six road (now North Sea Road). In 1956, the whole industry of Shanghai national musical instrument industry implemented cooperation, among which 86 national musical instrument workshops merged into Shanghai national musical instrument cooperative. In July 1958, the cooperative was established as a collective owned Shanghai national musical instrument factory.

The production technique of national musical instruments integrates the elements of history, color and aesthetics, and combines various techniques such as modeling, carving, painting and inlaying, which has outstanding cultural and artistic value. Minle No.1 factory employs famous people in the field of folk music as consultants to guide and identify the product technology, sound quality and other aspects, so that the product grade has been substantially improved. The exquisite craftsmanship also makes Shanghai's national musical instruments win many awards. They have won the national light industry quality product award and Shanghai quality product award for many times.

Due to the technical difficulties, long learning period and hard work in the production of national musical instruments, facing the situation of older producers and lack of successors, some protective measures have been taken and further efforts are still needed.
