Yiyang Xiaoyu bamboo art refers to the small pieces of bamboo utensils made by traditional techniques such as splicing, inlaying and tenoning. "Yu" is Yiyang dialect, which means a kind of technology of heating and bending bamboo components to meet the needs of modeling.

Yiyang is located in the north central part of Hunan Province, with fertile soil, abundant rainfall, suitable climate and abundant bamboo resources. Local people have long used local bamboo to make various utensils. Bamboo utensils have been found in the Neolithic Daxi cultural relics unearthed in tujiatai, South Yiyang County. After years of evolution and development, to "the early Ming Dynasty, Yiyang bamboo industry, practitioners all over the urban and rural areas, products can be seen everywhere in the streets" ("Yiyang City records"). In the Qing Dynasty, Yiyang was known as the "city of bamboo utensils" in the south of the Yangtze River. The water bamboo mat in maozhuhu lake, the Xiaoyu bamboo utensils in hejiaqiao and the bamboo bone paper umbrella in Sanliqiao were known as the "three wonders of bamboo city". During the reign of Daoguang in Qing Dynasty, Xiaoyu bamboo art began to be exported to Britain, France and other countries. In the past 100 years, he has won more than 80 gold and silver awards in various exhibitions at home and abroad.

Xiaoyu's bamboo art is particular about material selection. It generally uses rigid (hemp) bamboo with a diameter of less than 5cm to make the skeleton, and uses Phyllostachys pubescens to make parts. When making bamboo utensils, more than 30 processing procedures such as selecting materials, cutting materials, burning oil and making can be completed. Yiyang Xiaoyu bamboo art has beautiful shape, fine workmanship and durability. In the local area, all kinds of bamboo utensils cover almost all aspects of production and life.
