Xiashi lantern color is mainly popular in Xiashi Town, Haining City, Zhejiang Province. As early as the Qianfu period (874-879) of emperor Fu Zong of Tang Dynasty, Xiashi lanterns were well-known in the south of the Yangtze River. In the Southern Song Dynasty, they were listed as imperial tributes. During the reign of Emperor Qianlong in Qing Dynasty, Xiashi had a grand occasion of performing lanterns, following lanterns and fighting lanterns. The "tower lanterns" in Xiadong street, the "Lingyun Pavilion" in Henggang bridge and the "Meiting" in HengTou appeared one after another. From the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century, Xiashi Folk Lantern making and Yingdeng were popular, and the lantern color making technology and modeling form also had a great breakthrough, with the emergence of "dragon boat", "Lotus picking boat" and other varieties.
Xiashi lantern is famous for its needle pattern. Its products are exquisite and exquisite. With rice paper, bamboo strips and lead wire as the main materials, the lamp body has eight production techniques, such as painting, bending, carving, binding, needling, mounting, pasting and knot. After being made, the lamp can show a vivid and lifelike three-dimensional picture.
On the basis of traditional techniques, Xiashi lantern has been continuously improved and innovated, forming five kinds of seat lamp, carrying lamp, wall lamp, hanging lamp and gift lamp, and further improving its ornamental and collection value. Now the main inheritor of Xiashi lantern making technique is Hu Jinlong. Due to various reasons, most of the students have abandoned their art, and the unique and exquisite lamp making technology is on the verge of being lost, which is in urgent need of rescue and protection.
