Introduction to Yugu Daoqing

Yugu Daoqing is popular all over Anhui Province, especially in Xiaoxian and Jieshou, and has formed their own branches and schools. Among them, the Xiaoxian group is greatly influenced by the similar music in Shandong Province. Its singing style is banqiang, which can be divided into "hanqiang" and "Huaqiang" according to its performance function and singing genre. The Jieshou group is also called "zhuiziwu", and its singing style is mainly composed of "shangyun" such as "Manjianghong", "inverted rolling curtain" and "xiayun" such as "yinniusi" and "zoudou". Most of the performances are performed in the form of one person beating the fishing drum and simple board accompaniment.

The traditional programs of Yugu Daoqing include the long Golden Whip, the three swordsmen, the general of Yang family and the biography of Huilong, the middle part of Wang Dingbao's loan, Lei Gongzi's marriage and eight horses, the short part of Ma Qian's splashing water, Wang Xiang's sleeping ice and Ding Lan's carving wood. It has strong local flavor and strong educational function.

Since the end of the 20th century, there has been a sharp decrease in the number of performances of Yugu Daoqing, and the number of artists has declined. For example, Liu Yonglin, the "Huaqiang" Yugu in Xiaoxian County, is the only one who can still perform. His life is on the line, and he is seriously endangered and needs to be protected.
