Introduction to Yong Opera:
Applicant: Nanning City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region
Yongju opera is one of the four major local operas in Guangxi. It used to be called "Guangxi", "Laoxi" and "wuliuqiang" in the old time. It is popular in Guangxi, Guangdong, Yunnan, Guizhou, Vietnam, Cambodia and other countries. It originated in Hunan Province and belongs to the pihuang tune system. Because its activity center is in the ancient Yongzhou area and it is sung in Yongzhou Mandarin, it was named "Yongju" after the founding of new China.
Yongju opera, rooted in the folk, has been gradually perfected and matured with the careful creation of artists of past dynasties. It has formed a complete set of music singing, performance program and repertoire with strong local flavor and national characteristics. It has a large audience among the folk and is deeply loved by people of all nationalities in Nanning and its surrounding areas.
Yong opera has a profound cultural heritage and is influential in Southeast Asia. At the end of 1950s and the beginning of 1960s, the leaders of the Central Committee watched many excellent Yong dramas, such as "crossing the border by blocking horses", "Sishui pass", "Wutai Huixiong" and so on. The troupe also received high praise when performing for leaders and delegation of Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia and Singapore.
