Xiaoyi puppet opera is one of the local characteristic operas in Shanxi Province, which is popular in Xiaoyi City and surrounding cities and counties.

Xiaoyi puppet opera is a kind of stick puppet opera, which was introduced into Xiaoyi area in Song Dynasty. The puppet is simple and rough in shape, flexible and vivid in expression, and skillful in mechanism, which is of Great Northern characteristics. Xiaoyi Puppet Troupe has various forms of performance, known as "two forms, three kinds of singing". "Two forms" refer to puppets and shadow puppets. Originally, Xiaoyi puppet opera was an independent class. Later, it combined with shadow puppet opera to form a "Lantern shadow class". It performed puppet opera in the daytime and shadow puppet opera in the evening. "Three kinds of singing Tunes" refer to piqiang, Wanqiang and Zhonglu Bangzi. At first, Xiaoyi puppet opera was performed with Xiaoyi Yangge ganban tune, piqiang and Zhonglu Bangzi (Jin Opera), and later with wanwan tune.

The puppet show of Xiaoyi carries Xiaoyi's customs, social ethics, aesthetic fashion and so on. It plays a positive role in punishing the evil and promoting the good and inspiring people. It provides fresh materials for the study of sociology, folklore and local history and culture.
