Enshi lantern opera is a kind of local opera in Hubei Province. It has a history of nearly 200 years since it was introduced into Enshi from Sichuan in Qianlong period of Qing Dynasty. It is mainly spread in more than 20 counties and cities in Enshi, Lichuan and Eastern Chongqing.
The singing music of Enshi lantern opera is mainly composed of "Zhengqiang" and "Xiaodiao". Zhengqiang mainly includes "benqiang", "Qiju and a half", "yiziban", "Beiqiang", "Shengou tune", "Siping tune" and "Chenhe tune", all of which belong to banqiang style and consist of two lines. Xiaodiao is free and flexible, and mostly comes from the popular dengge minor in Enshi .
Enshi lantern opera has three kinds of roles: Xiaosheng, Xiaodan and clown. They are small in role, play and class. They have no strict requirements on costumes, props and stage. They can be performed anytime and anywhere. They adapt to the cultural environment and geographical conditions of the local mountainous areas. Enshi lantern opera now has 112 repertoires, all of which are single opera. These plays are exquisite, concise, easy to understand, and they are popular among the audience.
After hundreds of years of tempering, Enshi lantern show unique artistic charm in one move, one tune and one board, and maintain a fresh personality different from other sister arts. It shows the life of the lower class and the local customs, which has important reference value in the study of folklore.
