Pingchao town belongs to Tongzhou District, Nantong City, Jiangsu Province. It is located in the north suburb of Nantong city. It is located in the river sea plain with the Yangtze River in the southwest, the Yellow Sea in the East, pleasant climate and fertile soil. It is known as the "Pearl of the river and the sea". It is one of the first batch of open satellite towns approved by the people's Government of Jiangsu Province in 1986. The town has a total area of 109.6 square kilometers and a population of 114320 (2017). It has jurisdiction over 6 neighborhood committees and 20 village committees.

In October 2019, Pingchao town was selected as one of the "Top 1000 towns with comprehensive strength in China in 2019".

The origin of place names

Pingchao, formerly known as danjiadian, also known as Taocun, is 30 li away from Tongzhou City, also known as "30 Li". In 1762, Emperor Qianlong went down to the south of the Yangtze River by water. It rained continuously for several days. When he passed through Tongzhou, the weather began to clear. Standing in the bow of the boat, Emperor Qianlong wrote a poem: "the river is vast, the waves wash the sand, the turbid water is clear, the tide is smooth.". Since then, the Emperor gave it the name of "Pingchao". Pingbei, Pingnan, Pingxi and Xinba belong to Pingchao.

It was called Pingchao city in the late Qing Dynasty. Pingchao town was established in 1952, changed its name to Hongzhuan commune in 1958, changed to Pingchao commune in 1959, established Pingdong commune and Pingxi commune in 1961, and merged into Pingchao town in 1983. In 1996, it covers an area of 34 square kilometers and has a population of 51000.
