Benniu has been an important market town in anxixiang since it was designated as Wujin in 686 ad. In the Ming Dynasty, it was changed to Xiang, and in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties, it was still one of the three important towns in Wujin County (Benniu, Futong and Henglin).
