Dongping town is 42 kilometers away from the county seat, 120 nautical miles away from Hong Kong and 76 nautical miles away from Macao. The town covers an area of 128.95 square kilometers (2017), and the market town covers an area of 4.5 square kilometers, with a population of 45799 (2017) in 9 fishery management areas and 7 agricultural management areas, including 14000 fishermen. Dongping people are mainly engaged in marine fishing, fishing vessel building and seafood processing industry. At present, there are 472 motor-driven fishing boats, 1920 sets of radar, satellite guidance, fish detector and other advanced navigation aids. It is a well-known shark fin production base in China, which mainly focuses on deep sea stinging and has complete towing operations. The annual sea fishing output is 51000 tons, with high-quality fish products accounting for more than 70%. Xisha, Nansha and offshore fishing grounds in the East China Sea have been developed, and seafood products are sold well in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. In 1997, the total output value of industry, agriculture and fishery in Dongping town was 465 million yuan, and the per capita income of fishermen was 8000 yuan, ranking first in the whole county.
