The town is under the jurisdiction of Da'an District, Zigong City. Xindian commune was established in 1958, Xindian township was established in 1984 and Xindian town was established in 1995. On July 29, 2020, the National Patriotic Health Association decided to name Xindian town as a national health township for the period of 2017-2019.

It is planned to develop 400 standardized Rabbit Breeders, 5 large breeders, 1 leading enterprise, 2 animal husbandry circular economy parks, 600000 high-quality rabbits with a total output value of 15 million yuan and a net income of 6 million yuan. In order to improve the breeding level and efficiency, the town government coordinated the establishment of rabbit professional cooperatives. In order to improve the degree of organization of rabbit breeding and the ability to resist market risk, the specialized cooperative organization should carry out training and guidance, provide material supply, organize product sales, standardize business behavior, and guide production development, so as to form a small group and large-scale development pattern. The town government has also formulated a policy of reward and support. The one-time subsidy is 10000 yuan for breeding farms with 1000 to 3000 newly introduced breeding rabbits, 30000 yuan for breeding farms with more than 3000 newly introduced breeding rabbits, 5000 yuan for standard breeding farms with 20000 to 50000 newly built meat rabbits, and 1000 yuan for standard breeding farms with more than 50000 newly built meat rabbits 0 yuan.
