Historical evolution
Jiezhou, known as Jieliang in ancient times, is the hometown of Guan Yu, a famous Shuhan general in the Three Kingdoms. It is located in Jiezhou Town, 15 kilometers southwest of Yuncheng City. In the west of the town, there is the largest existing Guandi temple in China, commonly known as Jiezhou Guandi temple. It is a key cultural relic protection unit in China.
Jiezhou Guandi temple was founded in the ninth year of kaihuang (589) of Sui Dynasty and rebuilt in the seventh year of dazhongxiangfu (1014) of Song Dynasty. It was built and destroyed many times. The existing building was rebuilt after the fire in 1702 of Kangxi in Qing Dynasty for ten years. The temple is bounded by East-West streets and is divided into North and south parts, covering a total area of about 66600 square meters. Jienan, known as Jieyi garden, is composed of Jieyi square, Junzi Pavilion, Sanyi Pavilion, lotus pool, rockery and other buildings. The remaining 2-meter-high Jieyi stele, which depicts the characters in white, with peach blossoms and bamboo branches, is ingenious in design and highly skilled in carving. It was built under the leadership of yanrusi in the 28th year of Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1763). The peach forest in the garden is luxuriant, with thousands of branches, which is quite interesting. In the north of the street is the main temple, facing south from the north. It is a palace like layout, covering an area of 18570 square meters. On the horizontal line, it is divided into the central courtyard, the east courtyard and the West courtyard. The central courtyard is the main body, and on the main line, it is divided into two parts: the front courtyard and the back palace. The front courtyard is Zhaobi, Duanmen, pheasant gate, Wumen, Shanhai Zhongling square, Yushu building and Chongning hall. On both sides are the bell and Drum Tower, Dayi towering square, Jingzhong guanri square and Zhuifeng temple. The Hougong is centered on the "Qi Su Qianqiu" square and Chunqiu building, with Dao building and Yinlou standing symmetrically on the left and right. There are Chongsheng temple, Sanqing hall, Zhugong temple, Baoyuan palace, Shesheng palace and East Garden in the east courtyard. There are Changshou palace, Yongshou palace, Yuqing palace, Xinsheng palace, daozhengsi, huishansi and xihuayuan in the West courtyard, as well as the "wandaizhan" and "weizhenhuaxia" square in the vestibule. There are more than 100 temples in the temple, with clear primary and secondary, and rigorous layout. The palace and pavilion are majestic; the buildings are uneven in height and orderly in front and back; the archways stand high and the arches are densely arranged. The buildings form their own pattern and are harmonious and unified, and the layout is very appropriate. In the courtyard, the ancient cypresses are towering, the vines are full of trees, the lawn is like felt, and the fragrance of flowers is charming, which makes the magnificent Guandi Temple full of strong flavor of life.
