Gulou Street

Gulou Street is located at No. 65, dongjihuying, Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province. It is located in the center of the city and is the seat of the provincial government. It borders Liuxiang and Miaoqian streets in Yingze District in the south, Xinghualing and balingqiao streets in Sanqiang street in the East, Pozi street, Sanqiao street and Xinjian Road in the west, Sanqiao street in Chengfang Dongxi street in the north, and julun street in the north. It has an area of 1.6 square kilometers, 53 streets and alleys, 37267 permanent residents (in 2010) and 246 resident units.

History and culture

Gulou Street has a long history. Culture and commerce are concentrated. Most of the streets under its jurisdiction were formed in the Ming Dynasty. There are many streets following the historical city. Such as Xiaoqiang, beixiaoqiang, xiaoerfuxiang, fangshanfu, linquanfu, etc. The name of the sub district office is also derived from the drum tower, a historical relic. The drum tower was built in the Tang Dynasty and rebuilt twice during the reign of emperor Shunzhi and Emperor Jiaqing of the Qing Dynasty. It was one of the most magnificent buildings in Taiyuan at that time. The chanting tower built during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty echoed this. After 1912, Yan Xishan restored the drum tower. And turned into a local goods exhibition hall. During the war of liberation, Yan Xishan was built as a garrison position. When Taiyuan was liberated in April 1949, he was injured by gunfire and was in great danger of collapse. It was demolished in 1952. The street is named after the building, which is still in use today.
