Houzhai town

Houzhai town is a town under the jurisdiction of Nan'ao County and is the resident of the county people's government. It is located in the middle of Nan'ao Island, Nan'ao County, Shantou City, Guangdong Province, adjacent to Longdong town in the East. It covers an area of 40.88 square kilometers (2017) and has a population of 36095 (2017). It governs three neighborhood committees and 19 village committees. It is the political, economic and cultural center of the county.

In 1927, the county moved from Shenzhen to Macao. Most of the old houses are of "xiashanhu" gray wood structure, and most of the new houses are of two-story concrete structure.

geographical environment

The western part of the town is a hilly area. Gaozhang mountain, 587 meters above sea level, is the highest peak of the county. It faces the sea from north to south, and the eastern part is relatively flat. It has always been the main settlement of Longao residents. The economy is dominated by fishery. The town is on the Bank of Qianjiang Bay, covering an area of 0.75 square kilometers.

The main streets are Long'ao Road, Zhongxing Road, Haibin Road, Jinlong Road, East Street, West Street, etc. County commerce, distribution, posts and telecommunications, banks are distributed on both sides of Longbin road. There are chemical, embroidery, fishing net processing, hardware repair, toys and other town run enterprises. The ring road passes through here.

Economics

In 2017, the total output value of industry and agriculture was 1.117 billion yuan, breaking the 1.1 billion yuan mark for the first time, an increase of 11.59%, including 933 million yuan of agricultural output value, 184 million yuan of industrial output value, and 29.19 million yuan of general budget revenue. The rural per capita income was 11938 yuan, an increase of 16.75%. The annual total output of Fisheries was 81400 tons, with a total output value of 710 million yuan, an increase of 4%.

history

In the third year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty (1575 A.D.), there were assistant commanders in charge of Zhang and Chao. The next year, he built a city in Long'ao, where he interacted with Shen'ao and Yun'ao. The eastern part of the town was called Longao in ancient times, which originated from Longyan Shaao on the Bank of Qianjiang Bay. According to the annals of Nan'ao in the Qing Dynasty, "Long'ao faces the sea in both the north and the south, the sea in the south, the inland sea in the north, Qianjiang in the south, Houxi in the north, and Houzhai in the south."

In 1914, Nan'ao was divided into three districts, and Long'ao was the second. In 1946, Longao was divided into Longdong and Longxi townships. Longxi administrative committee was set up in 1950, and Longxi township was set up in 1952. In 1953, it was divided into two townships, Longxi and Xishan. In 1956, the township was withdrawn and belonged to Nan'ao fishery commune. Houzhai commune was established in 1960. Houzhai town was established in 1965. In February 1984, Houzhai commune was withdrawn and the urban area was merged into Houzhai town.
