It is located in the northwest of Ningyuan County, adjacent to Zhonghe Baohe in the west, baijiaping in the north and Renhe Town in the south, with a total area of 59.61 square kilometers (2017). The township has four administrative villages, namely Shatian, mianhuaping, paishanao and ganziyuan, and 44 villager groups.

Historical evolution
The township was named after mianhuaping village. Guangkou township was set up at the beginning of liberation. Mianhuaping township was under the jurisdiction of Renhe district. In 1958, it was incorporated into lijiapu commune. It was changed to mianhuaping Yao nationality township in 1984.

The township has 1993 mu of cultivated land, including 1221 mu of paddy field.
